(Benjamin Franklin comes onstage.  He is not happy, holding his hand in a handkerchief, he picks up his finger, looks at it, wraps it again in the handkerchief and shakes his head.)

A paper cut....some things never change!

         (He holds the finger up)

And in a few days, this will be healed, as if the cut never happened.  This never ceases to amaze me!

         (He looks at the audience)
Most people have no idea how their body works.  Even today, in your time, do you know?

(He looks into the audience, points at a person)

Are you a doctor?  If you are, then maybe you know why the blood pours out of one place, but drips from another.

Why one person gets sick, and then heals, where another gets the same illness, and dies.

(The lights change, and it is dark and damp looking)

Where are we now?  In the home of a dear friend in London.  Not in the pleasant section, with the wide windows for the odd ray of sunshine, or the beautiful brocade couches and paintings from France......

No we are below.  Three stories to be exact.  There is the main floor, then underneath is the kitchen, where the servants prepare the food, below that is the storage level......and then, where we are now.  The basement.

(He walks around touching the 'walls' and pulling a hand back - it's slimy here.)

The basement in these old buildings is not a place to be sick......but it is the only place deep enough, and far away from prying eyes......and, most important......cold enough where one can be sure the smell of the dead bodies we have stolen from the grave can be hidden until we dissect and examine and learn all that can be learned before .......returning the remains to the earth.  Sometimes, we do not have the chance to take the bodies up, so they remain here, for you to discover them in a few hundred years.  And wonder what happened in this place.

Not many of you know that I was involved in these experiments.  Some of you will still villify those of us who did these things.

But....I have been punished enough........the death of a friend is never easy, but when you fear that it was your own involvement which created the situation leading to that death, the guilt that engulfs your brain, your heart, this guilt is not easily calmed let alone extinguished.

In your day, a cut like he had would probably not have killed him, but in our time, the sight of the swelling, the dark lines on the skin, the......I won't go into the final stages of blood poisoning, but suffice it to say, it is not pleasant to endure, nor to watch.

The helplessness is the worst.....to watch a young man, a brilliant young man, married to a young woman who you love like a daughter,.....to watch this, is like going through a hell that Dante could not envision.

William Hewson, Bill to his friends, was very much the man who wanted to learn, despite the societal restrictions of our time.  His mistake was a scalpel too sharp, or perhaps he was tired, or the lamp not bright enough......who knows why the blade cut him, and the putrid decaying flesh spread into his healthy body, killing him in just weeks.

I had warned him, we had all warned him, of the dangers.  Being caught robbing a grave, or doing these experiments, could result in serious consequence - ostracization of polite society being the least problematical.

(Franklin shakes his head, he is truly affected)

There are those among you today doing the same - hiding in laboratories, disguising their results and concepts until such time as they are more acceptable to the public.

But they all share a common problem - what to do when what you do catches up with you.  And hurts you - how do you tell?  Who do you tell?

I never liked when he did the cuts on young ones, even though the expression 'dead is dead' does come to mind.  There is something extraordinarily sad about a young person who has died - the promise never coming to fruition.......

           (He stares off)

Like my son.  I chose that he not be innoculated against the smallpox. I felt he was too young.  Unfortunately, he was not too young to die.  He was four years old.  I did not want to take the chance and have the thread with the smallpox……(hard for him to say)……go into him.  Perhaps if I had thought it out with more logic, perhaps if I had heeded what some said to do…..perhaps…he would have lived.  There was no guarantee……life rarely has.  And my choice has haunted me all the days of my life, and affected my every decision.

(He takes the handkerchief off his hand, looks at the wound.)

I told William that it was dangerous to do what he did – but for the sake of all humanity, he should continue if he felt it best.

And so he did, and his discoveries, even though he died young, helped others live.

Did my son’s death help me make decisions in a better way?  To choose life, to take a chance to save lives, to save a country that was just young and needed to live past four years…….I would like to think so.

(He puts the handkerchief into his pocket)

I doubt I will remember to wash this handkerchief properly, it is here for memory sake.  In this time, you have many ways of removing stains….perhaps one day, you will find a way of washing away the pain of ……mistakes……
            (He exits.  End of scene)

Monologue Mania Day #1136 Three by Janet S. Tiger (c) Mar. 24, 2017

                                  Three
                                                    a monologue   by
by Janet S. Tiger (c) all rights reserved (c) 2017

(Woman comes in, she is in her 30s, dressed in a lab coat.  She has a file, which she holds close to her chest. )

(British accent, educated, she speaks slowly, thoughtfully)  One, two three.  Granny ate a flea.  She roasted it, and toasted it and had it for her tea..... Mum used to tell me that when she wanted to make me laugh.  It always worked....until now.

Outside of the Holy Trinity, I cannot think of anything else with three that is prominent, that can take my mind off of this.....

(She looks at the file, then throws it down)

Three.  Wait.....Three sheets to the wind.....(Smiles) That's how the first came about.....poor thing....

Easy as 1-2-3- well there's a lie for you......Two's company, three's a crowd, well, not when the two are married and want a third.....or maybe just one of the two wants a third.

Genetic defect.  Mitochondria.  It's so funny.  I never liked biology.  Math.  Numbers. From when I was little, I understood numbers.  They were....my friends.  They never lied.  Everywhere I looked there were numbers!  The number of windows in the church, the number of squares on the floor.  The number of children in the class.  They were always clear and simple.  No matter how difficult, it always comes down to numbers.  But.....it doesn't.  Not now.  Maybe it never did.

He doesn't want to take a chance with this new technology - and it's funny, he's the engineer.  He says he doesn't want someone else's baby, and that's what we'd get - when I tell him it's just the mitochondria, he shakes his head and walks away.

Yet he would adopt.  That's all right, because we would get to meet the parents.  That's all right.  When I say, this would be our baby, his and mine....he says....and a third.  There'd always be....a third.

It's my fault of course.  Always mine.  The DNA in my mitochondria is....faulty.

(Takes a deep breath)  Leigh's syndrome.  Our first died at three months.....Elizabeth was her name.  Sweet Beth..... Our second......Angela....Angie she would have been, she made to nine months.   (Very hard)  He's worried that the third.....that I might not survive the third....that another loss might finish me off.  I did go through some postpartum, and having your babies die, well, that can be a bit depressing, but....he just doesn't want to take a chance on the new.  Scientists we are, and yet he won't try the future.  So we will leave the planet without a future for us.....

What do I do?  I still love the man, but.....I want a child.  My child.  Someone who will look like me......Unlike numbers, there was something amazingly....real about what grew inside of me!  (Choking up)  I loved those babies, even before they were born.....and now, I have a chance to have another.  Before my time is up.  I won't mind raising a child not born in me....but later, after I have a chance for one to make it....past a year......

But what of Johnny?  What do I do with him?  Do I try to convince him?  How long will that take - if ever?  Do I leave him?  Search for another love?  (Laughs)  It took me 30 years to find him!  Do  I get a donor?  So my baby would be, part me, part stranger, part...strange woman with healthy mitochondria.

         (Listens then turns away)

I guess you didn't know, did you?  That's what happens when you go away across the pond for a few years!  After the second baby with Leigh's syndrome, we did some checking.  No one in my family had it, never, all babies born strong and healthy!  My Mum had a great deal of pride in that, she did.  But that was my family.... that raised me..(takes a deep breath)..my real family now they had problems....a bunch of dead babies......and me, I was the lucky one who lived and was healthy.....and given up for adoption because no one wanted to see if I turn up dead in a few months.....after all that work of giving birth.....and feeding me.....so they left me with the church.....

Was lucky I suppose .....that when we went to find my biological family one of the sisters remembered the name...and where to find them.........so the secrets come out.  The sins of the fathers and all that....but in this case, it was....the sins of the mother's ...mitochondria.

I knew my Mum loved me.....but had she told me the truth, maybe.....well, things would've been different.  She was a proud woman, proud of her ignorance, and yet proud I was smart.....so unlike the others in the brood.  How she kept them all from ever telling me, I still don't know.  Sheer force of will I imagine.  How I wish that will had seeped into me, because I do need it now.....

          (She nods at the audience)

Sorry to hit you with all this in one shot, but. you tell me, my friend - what should I do?

          (Listens, shakes head.)

No answers?  Not surprised!

(Turns to leave, stops, looks back)

Funny, I always loved ....the power of three....now, is the third time a charm?  Or is it just.....three strikes and we're all out....

           (She exits, end of scene)

(The actor enters, laughing and crying at the same time, blows nose, smiles)

Okay, you got me.  That was funny!  What is it that I  envision?  What do I want?

Now those  are funny lines!  Maybe we should put them in the play?  I mean, does it matter where?  I can find a place, you know why?  Because I am a (holds her hands out wide) A PROFESSIONAL!

Give me what you want me to do, and I'll do it!  Don't like that whole scene which the audience loved?  It's out!

My vision?  Since when the hell does that matter?  Since when did you assholes give a shit?

Oh, wait, my therapist has told me to use the mindful approach.....use 'I' sentences.  Well, I feel this project is now a pile of shit.

When you talk to me like that, I feel like you are a bunch of idiots!

I feel that I want to scream, oh, wait, maybe I just did!

How's that?  Is the therapy working?  I think so!

You see, I really don't which way to go!  What exactly do you want me to do?  May I remind you that I have done EVERYTHING you asked!  You had me write this play to your specs, not what I wanted from the very beginning.....I wanted a Vagina Monologues kind of event, using all the stories I had, some great stories!....I wanted to take a very dark subject, and make it into a comedy so people could laugh while they face some very upsetting things.

And you might have guessed it was a comedy from the title.....SUICIDE, A COMEDY!

So please, the audience liked the broad humor in the first reading, but when you told me to take it out, I did!  And now, the audience leaves because they are DEPRESSED!  And you want me to MAKE IT FUNNY AGAIN!  It can't be everything!  It can't be ...what was the word you used?....somber....and funny at the same time!  What it could have been was an audience pleaser.  It could have been able to help people get through rough times.  What it could have been is funny, and then people laugh through their tears! Just like I'm doing now!

(Turns to leave, stops, looks back)

But please, don't have the gall to ask me what I want!  Now, that, that makes me laugh!

(Exits to a new wisdom of how to get a better contract)

(Jeannie walks over to Valerie, puts an arm around her)

JEANNIE -   First you say maybe…you want to kill him.  Then it’s just torture….well, I have
another view, …you have a problem, and it has nothing to do with death or torture...it has to do with life....your life….am I right?

(Valerie turns away)

JEANNIE -  You think you’re at the end of your rope, and having been to that point myself  ..I
understand….

(She looks at the others, Clark nods)

JEANNIE – We all do…….you have to take the rope and make it into a lifeline.
(Remembering) I was taking care of my uncle, who lived an hour away, and my mother, who had just broken her hip.  I was getting maybe two, three hours a night sleep.  My eye was twitching so much the doctor sent me to a therapist, and she asked me, what was I doing for myself, and I told her, I come here, and I talk to you…..and she said ‘one hour every two weeks is not enough- what else do you like?’  I told her I liked to eat chocolate.....but also, I loved to draw, so I started drawing, and.... it didn’t make anyone young, and it didn’t cure any illnesses, but... it helped me…it was my truth….. now you….you need to come to your truth….We can help you….

(She indicates the others)

JEANNIE -  But you have to be honest!  You have to tell …the truth….

          (Scene continues)

(Ariana and Isaac are having lunch, away from the other students on the lunch court.  She points up- he looks up, but then mostly at her)

ARIANA -  You asked me what I see when I see numbers, well, what do you see when you see colors?  Is the sky blue?

ISAAC -  So, is this like, a trick question?  Because we both know that it's blue.....

ARIANA -  Because you see it as blue?

ISAAC - (Questioning)  ..Because of science?

ARIANA -  You mean what they teach you in physics?  (quoting a source she remembers) That it's blue because molecules in the air scatter blue light from the sun more than they scatter red light.......And that's why sunset seems red and orange, because the blue light has been scattered away from the line of sight....(to have fun with him)..by fairies that are bringing down the curtain of night!

ISAAC -  (Laughs in spite of himself)

ARIANA - But not everyone sees a blue sky...people, like my Dad, are color blind and everything is shades of gray, so, are they wrong?

ISAAC -  It's not that they're wrong, they just see things.....

ARIANA -  Off- color?

ISAAC -  You know what I mean!

ARIANA - Differently.  That's the word you need.   And the blind don't see the colors at all....so who's right?  That's the real question, isn't it?  What is the truth?  What is real?  How can you be sure of anything?

ISAAC -  Actually, if you want to be specific.....the white light is a mix of all the colors and one guy discovered that....

ARIANA - (cuts him off).... if you take a prism, it separates the colors, into a spectrum, and you're his namesake, right?  Isaac Newton?

ISAAC -  (Impressed)  Wow, I didn't know you knew about him!

ARIANA -  I know about a lot of things, my new friend.  There's the Tyndall effect and the Raleigh scattering......

ISAAC -  You understand that?

ARIANA-  It's the wavelength that we register....I got it.  I may not remember which number goes with which color, but I can repeat my question?  Is the sky blue?  And more important, what color is it, when you close your eyes?

         (They hear a bell)

ARIANA - You answer that question, and that is the secret to life.....

(She exits, and he watches after her.  End of scene)
