(Older actor comes out - waving to the audience)

Announcing a new candidate for the highest office in the land.....you  heard it here first on the Senior Channel!

Drumroll please!

My butt for President!

      (Cups ear, listening)

I hear that some of you are asking.....why should my butt be President?

Easy!

My butt is very smart!

My butt can make phone calls - even when my phone is in my pocket, next to my genitals, who - so far as I know -have yet to make a call.

But my butt calls all manner of people - my children, my spouse.....even complete, strangers!

Since  my butt is that smart - why not big plans?  Big plans for my butt!

I can see the posters now - and the fliers that flood into our mailboxes during election year -

My Butt will solve all the problems of this country - of the world!

Vote for a Butt for President!

(Turns to leave, stops, looks back)

And for the other candidates - they can just Butt Out!

(He exits - hopefully from the race!)

(Older woman enters, she is in her bathrobe.  Southern accent.)

I told you, you don't hafta worry about me, I'm fine.....just takes me a bit to get goin in the mornin....of course, I had a hard night.....my mother came and took the children.....and did not leave a letter or note or anythin!  I was worried all night....My momma she does things like that, I mean I love her, but when she takes those children, they are not old enough to do some things, and to be out all night!

I could not sleep a wink!  I was thinkin of callin the police, but then.....this mornin, I remembered somethin......my momma died five years ago, and my children are all grown.....or is she gone ten years.....or....when did she die?  Maybe she is still alive....she's not well, can't remember things, just like me......I swear I heard her voice outside, clear as a bell........it had to be her.........what is it I remember?  Sometimes I wonder.....

And I do recall, when my daughter was little, she came to me one day and asked...'How do we know which is real?  How do we know this is not the dream, and when we're asleep, that's not the real?'

And I wasn't sure what to say......but I know now that is exactly what I ask myself every day.....

(She turns to leave, stops, looks back)

I suppose reality is not my friend anymore.....but you are my dear......my friend....come in and we can have some coffee today, like we do every day.....until one of us leaves for the dream world......for real....

(She exits into a world of.......)

Monologue Mania Day #831 Mummy Dearest (for the Senior Channel) revised by Janet S. Tiger (c) May 23,  2016

(Man of indeterminate age walks regally onstage, nodding to the audience.  Slight               accent, but indeterminate - could it be Egyptian?)

I am very pleased to be here on your Senior Channel today.  This program of...senior moments....is a perfect place for me to reach many of your people.

They asked me if I was a senior, and I told them, very carefully, that I am much older than anyone who has been on this show - including the gentleman of age 100 last week.

           (Deep breath)

I am - in your time - two thousand, one hundred and nineteen years of age.

Of course, my family tells me I hardly look a day over 2000!

So you see, I am very qualified to be a guest on your esteemed channel.

(Puffs up a little)  In my day, I was a very well respected man.  My family and I had been in a business that was needed and very much revered - what you call now - mummification - of beloved animals of the family.  In Egypt in that time, cats and dogs and even lizards and pet snakes were much beloved, and when they died, people wanted them to have a good life in the afterlife.  That is, as you say it.......where my family came in.

If you lived then, you would certainly have heard of us,  Seti and Sons.......

Top mummifiers.  We had a famous motto....(starts to speak in Egyptian stops)  Loosely translated it would be........When your pet dies, do not cry.....we are the best mummy makers for the....afterlife.....

        (He smiles, is happy, remembering)

Now, those really were the good old days!

         (Suddenly angry)

Until  Ptolemaic the Third.  He was...terrible!  Until his rule there were almost  no laws - then he came along- instead of one papyrus roll.......

         (He illustrates with his hands)

.......for all the laws, suddenly there are 63 papyrus rolls!  Who can read them all, let alone carry them!

(Thinks)  Let alone ......carry them out!

So…what is your word….(remembers) … graft.... became a way of life.   But it was not MY fault....I was only doing my part to keep up with the  Amenotephs!

Competition was brutal – and since a mummifier earned more than a farmer, many untrained people tried to....as you say it..... get into the picture.   Much like your Internet today, I think.

         (Smiles, remembering)

But we discovered a way to speed up production - inventive and simple, and it was by an accident.  It was actually my daughter - Nefertari's -  idea  -  she was playing with some rocks and sand and said to me, (imitates childlike voice) ...'eeeeet'- that's Daddy in ancient Egyptian - 'eeet, look, I made a mummy of a cat!'

And she proudly showed me a small mummy made out of.....the rocks and stones and earth.  My wife was horrified -  she always complains anyhow, but she told our daughter - (imitates, harsh and loud)- 'don't make a mummy when the cat is still alive'

Our little girl started to cry, and I told my wife....don't yell, foolish woman, she is only a little girl!

So we looked at the mummy - it was good for a child......and then....like a desert wind.... the idea came to me!

Once the process is completed, no one could know what was inside!  With a real dead animal, we would have to take hours and hours for the entire mummification process to be done properly - if you work too fast with the chemicals, the whole animal can ……(shudders) ….dissolve!  It was not a pretty thing.

Customers did not like when we told them the animal had …..dissolved, so we had become careful......but this, this was a better solution!

We experimented- then we found out if we used certain rocks and stone instead of the animal, then we could cut production time by five hours - on the sundial!

And we made a promise - never to tell anyone! It would be a family secret - throughout the ages......

And it made us very wealthy, which is why we can survive to this day, using similar methods to the ones we used on the animals!

So why am I here today, on this lovely program, which is so informative of your time?  Because some people in your time are doing bad things- and I am not talking about shooting and stabbing and taking pictures of your naked bodies, which seem to be your main interests today, I am talking about something much more serious - offending the Gods!

Yes, some of you, I believe the word is ...scientist....are digging up very sacred burial grounds ....and then you take pictures of the people and animals that are mummies!  It is called a CAT scan - which i still do not understand how you can have a CAT scan of a dog....or a lizard.  But many things here are completely incomprehensible to me.

The point is that disturbing the burial places was bad enough, but there is not a need to let the gods know that some of us....some of us who are well regarded in the afterlife....did not do a good job on the mummies of their beloved cats and dogs!

This is very bad for me and my family!

So please, using this show, and your Internet, please ask these scientists to stop immediately from the CAT scan process!  It is completely unnecessary and it will only cause grief!

Already, you are seeing the wrath of Anubis here in your time -(quoting)  'the oceans will rise, and the heavens will be hot fire on you'......so, if you want to avoid all the troubles of global warming and the hothouse effect, please stop scanning the animal mummies.

      (He bows)

Thank you.

(Turns to walk off, then stops)

For those who are wondering, I would tell you more about how we are still alive, unfortunately it is still a secret.....but we are working on an infomercial, so maybe next time when I return.....

(He exits, and do we hear him saying something?)

(To himself)  If you die, do not cry....Seti and Sons will help you avoid the afterlife........just try our new product.....from an old recipe......  (very faint)  but wait, there's more.....
(Lights down - but.....he'll be back!)

Monologue Mania Day #830 Triage (for Memorial Day)  by Janet S. Tiger (c) May 22,  2016

                                  Triage
                                                             (for Memorial Day)
(Not) A monologue by Janet S. Tiger  (c) 2016 all rights reserved
                                                           tigerteam1@gmail.com

Two actors necessary - one about 60, one in his 30s

(A man in a uniform enters, he's in his sixties, this is the nephew.  He salutes)

NEPHEW - My uncle was the reason I joined the Army.  He was a medic during World War II -

(A younger man in a uniform from WWII enters, but with a cane, he walks slowly, this is the uncle)

NEPHEW - ....and he never talked about it.  Never.  The other men in my family who fought, they had stories.  Not Uncle Jerome.  I used to ask him about it was like and all he would say was....'

(Uncle Jerome drops the cane and stands tall, he looks very young now)

UNCLE -  Triage.

NEPHEW - ...and when I asked what that meant, he would say.......

UNCLE -  Look it up!

(The nephew puts on a baseball cap and jacket, he is a kid again now)

NEPHEW - And I was young, and I had no idea what he was talking about.....so I kept asking ....
(younger voice)  Uncle Jerome, what's triage?

UNCLE - (Faster)  Look it up!

NEPHEW - What's triage?

UNCLE -  (Louder)  Look it up!

NEPHEW - (Louder)  What's triage?

UNCLE -  Look it up!

(The uncle now takes a dictionary from his pocket and holds it out)

NEPHEW-  What's triage?

(The nephew takes the book and looks)

NEPHEW - (Reading) Triage....from the French verb trier, meaning to separate, sift or select. (more serious) It is the process of determining the priority of patients' treatments based on the severity of their condition. This rations patient treatment efficiently when resources are insufficient for all to be treated immediately.  Those responsible for the removal of the wounded from a battlefield or their care afterwards would divide the victims into three categories:[3][4]
·        Those who are likely to live, regardless of what care they receive;
·        Those who are likely to die, regardless of what care they receive;
·        Those for whom immediate care might make a positive difference in outcome.

(The nephew sighs and hands the book back)

NEPHEW- That's what you did......

UNCLE -  Every day.....all day.....

NEPHEW -  But I still don't really understand.....

UNCLE - Okay, here it is maybe you can.  You see two of the calves just fell in the river after a storm, so the river's high, and fast, and you can only save one.....one calf is the one that's smaller, and weaker, but it's your favorite, with a white patch on her forehead......the other, the larger calf, she's stronger ......but you can only save one - which one do you pick?

NEPHEW -  Oh, boy, that's a tough question....

UNCLE -  Yeah.....if you jump in and pick the weak one, and she dies later from gettin' cold and sick, then you have no milk next winter......and if you try to save both of them.....you might not save either....and you might get swept away.....so....which one is it?  Who lives?  ...who dies?

NEPHEW -  (Starting to understand)  Maybe ...maybe I can see why you don't want to tell me the stories......

UNCLE -  When you're older.....

(The uncle takes the hat off his nephew and looks at it, shaking his head).  The nephew takes off his jacket and puts on the matching officer's cap to his uniform.  He stands up straight, military straight)

NEPHEW -  It must of been hard, making choices like that.....

UNCLE -  Why do you think I don't wanna remember.....every day, I remember, I think about all the guys I had to leave in the field......wonder about their families.....had I made the right choices......  and then.....I come here....to these reunions......and I see guys and they come up to me sometimes.....and they say things like.......

(The uncle takes a deep breath, trying to choke back the emotion)

NEPHEW -  I heard.....(Imitating)  'I want you to meet someone'.....and he turned to his family
'I want you to meet the reason I'm here - this is the man who saved my life....who crawled out and dragged me back and tied up my leg so I didn't die in some pile of mud......'

UNCLE -  (Hard to say) I guess some of the cows I picked made it through the war......

NEPHEW-  A fine herd......

UNCLE -  I just wish I could have saved them all.......

NEPHEW-  You did your best.......

UNCLE -  I suppose.......

NEPHEW-  Let's go back in.....I think it's time for the medal ceremony......I'm glad I could be here for this one, Uncle Jerome......

UNCLE -  Me, too......for all those who couldn't.....

(They salute each other and walk out, Uncle Jerome now with his cane, very slowly but still straight and tall.)

A big thank you to all those who have given their time - and their lives - to give us the gift of freedom.

Monologue Mania Day #829 Havdalah by Janet S. Tiger (c) May 21,  2016
In the Jewish tradition, havdalah is a ceremony at the end of the Sabbath on Saturday night.

                                  Havdalah
A monologue by Janet S. Tiger  (c) 2016 all rights reserved
                                                tigerteam1@gmail.com

(This actor's costume is part of the whole effect - one half will be white, the other blue....one blue glove one white glove, one blue shoe, one white shoe, you get the idea.  The actor enters with a white glove held high, the white side pointed out to the audience)

Three stars in the sky.....time to light the candles.....

Holy.  Thou shalt revere the Sabbath and keep it holy.........This is the end of the Sabbath.....the end of the holy day........and the rest of the week approaches, the profane of the ordinary hours of the week, the regular, the mundane.....

(Slowly turning to show the blue side of the costume)

But there is one moment.......maybe a part of a moment, where the holy and the profane are together, touching.......as the holy leaves and the profane is once again our daily worries.....what TV show is on, why doesn't the Internet go faster....did he get my text......is that sale over tomorrow or Monday....all that we think about......during the rest of the week......

At the moment that the holy and the profane meet, there is an instant......of perfect balance......of acceptance that life is not one or the other....but at every minute of every day....a mix......of the holy and the profane......

The candle is lit, the blue wax and the white wax melt together.......the Sabbath is over.....until next week......I hope you had.....a Shabbat Shalom.....and that we all remember the holy throughout this busy week to come.......

(If lighting is possible, the lights should dim as the actor slowly leaves.)
