Monologue Mania Day # 1510  Counted  (from the one-act) by Janet S. Tiger (c) April 4, 2018

(A woman comes out.  She is in her forties, but looks older, tired.  She holds some papers and shakes her head.  Slight Spanish accent)

Numbers.  How many?  Too many to count?  How many pages?

I saved this, from years ago.  You know what it is, mi hija?

The census pages.  Yes, I know I should have turned it in.  But....I was afraid.  That's not true.  I am still afraid.  Being afraid is part of this.

For you, not so bad.  In a few years, you will graduate, you will marry a nice boy, and you will give me grandchildren.  And you will fill out these papers, and these papers will be easy for you.  You will not have to lie.....

But me, for me, not so simple.

How many pages will they have next time?

And will they ask me questions I do not want to answer?

They want to count.....but I am asking, what counts?  I have been good.  Yes, I came across the border without permission.

But that is my only crime.

I have worked hard, and paid taxes, and my children work hard, and they pay taxes.

Some of the people born here, they do not know what they have.....they do bad things, they steal, they hurt people.  But they can stay, they count.....they are counted.

Numbers.

Even when I was little, I liked numbers.  That's why they like me in the tienditas....I am good selling things.....in all languages....with numbers.

Every night, when I go to sleep, I sleep with one eye open, for the men who come to send me back.  I've been lucky.....mucho suerte.......but luck runs out.....your number come up....like in the lottery, only not good......where do I go, when they send me away.  They say we have to go home, but this is home.   They say we are bad, but.....when they need me to work, then it is different.

They say a wall will be enough to stop us, but how high is that wall?  Is it higher than all my dreams?  How many hearts tall will that be?  Can anyone count that high?

       (Listens)

Yes, I have a lot of questions, mi hija, because for all these years, I wait, and I count up the money for other people.  Now I have another question for you......

When do I count?

(Turns to leave, stops looks back)

When do I get to be counted?

         (Lights down, end of scene)

This new play is based on a new question on the census for 2020 - article here

(The actor  - well, it's the playwright actually - comes out, opens an envelope and removes a letter in great expectation)

Dear Playwright....

We have to say that all the plays we read were MAHVELOUS!

(Smiling)   And yours stood out amongst the rest!

Your play was wonderful!  One might say a masterpiece!

(Happy) We loved the characters...

.......what a feast!

        (Dances around holding the letter)

(Very happy) The staging would be easy.....

And the concept audience - pleasing....

(Almost ecstatic)  The dialogue - oh........ so clever!

And the plot!  What an endeavour!

So relevant and yet....

So timeless....and please do not forget

We feel you have real talent!

We just know you will be very successful one day -and how!

(Stops, turns the letter so the audience can see the word, printed very large)

Unfortunately......, it won't be now.....

(Sighs heavily)  Thank you for entering....

And.....do not fear!

.....Just.....please try again next year.....

(The playwright takes the letter and goes to a file cabinet, opens it and we see the cabinet is stuffed.  Puts the letter in and struggles to close the drawer.  Not the end.....just another rejection letter to add to the stack!)

Monologue Mania Day # 1508 That Should Have Been My Part! by Janet S. Tiger (c) April 2, 2018

This is really a VERY rough song without music yet, for a musical in my brain.  The musical would be about - what else?- the theater!  Thanks for being here for the first draft.

That Should Have Been My Part!
                             A monologue by Janet S. Tiger   © all rights reserved  2015                                                                                       tigerteam1@gmail.com

(Young woman comes onstage, she is very upset, whirling around in anguish.  She points.)

       Spoken

There....do you see her......she's doing what I should be doing.....because....

That's My Part!
Did you hear me world?  I'm telling you.....THAT'S MY PART!
I'm perfect for it!
 I rehearsed for weeks......
And I knew every word

         Sung
That's the part I should have had....
If I didn't have those zits
If I'd bought those bigger tits
If the director had been smarter....
     (She wiggles suggestively)
And the blond had not used barter.....
That's right where I would be....
I'm the one you all would see!
       (Points)
That's where I should be now
On that stage in the spotlight
Instead of .....
In the back, with my boss' kids in tow!
While everyone is looking at……. someone else…..

I should have been up there
Ready to be free!
With every one focused.....
With all eyes just on...... ME!
It should have been the show
Everybody had to see
If only......If only.....
I hadn't missed that line
If my make-up had been divine!
Instead of......(quoting) ...too much shine!
If only I'd been able
         to remember that unstable
Stagehand's name......
Perhaps he would not
Have had to drop
That glass box with such verve!
(Spoken)  It really shook my nerve....
(Sung) Oh, it should have been MY part.....
My part....oh, it should have been.....
(She turns to leave, stops, looks back and leans over to whisper- then shouts instead)

....my part...!!!!!!!

(She exits to the finale of the song)

I should have been up there

It should have been the show

If only I'd been able

Have had to drop
That rope upon the stage
When my big moment came to rage....
Oh, it should have been MY part.....
My part....oh, it should have been.....my part...
(She turns to leave, stops, looks back and leans over to whisper)
If I only.....I wish I never ever had to.....fart....
