Monologue Mania Day # 1238 Summing it Up (for Osculation) by Janet S. Tiger (c) July 5, 2017

This is actually going to be part of another scene (below), but I think it will stand on its own.

                                 Summing it Up    (c)

ARIANA -  So, maybe you're a good teacher - or maybe, I knew more than I let on?  Or maybe there's something about numbers you don't quite get yet......so maybe, I'll SUM it up for you.  Get it?  Sum it up?    The the basis of the whole thing is....One plus one.....

(She goes to the board and starts to put up the numbers)

You love what infinity means, the beauty of adding one to anything and there never being an end....but all things end on this planet.....infinity is never the issue.........but... the reality is.....sometimes, the sum of the parts......

(She draws slowly now - the arrow symbol)

The sum of the parts is greater than the whole......

          ----------------------------------------------------------

And here's where it will go -

Monologue Mania Day # 1150 Osculation (last scene continued) by Janet S. Tiger (c) April 7, 2017
                                                     Osculation (for last scene continued)

(to understand this, please read yesterday's Day #1150 first)
ISAAC -  So everything....done for show.....

ARIANA -  Not everything.....you asked me about whether I ever told the truth.....the truth is a fluid thing....here's some......when I was about ten, I was in an airport, heading out to visit my grandparents.  My folks were sitting, talking to some other old hippies they'd met....so, I was just hanging out.....and this man came walking past, and I took a  look at him and I knew something was wrong.....and he looked around and then he ran into a bathroom.  I watched and a few moments later, some police ran up, with this one guy in a suit.

And I knew, just like I knew about the guy, I knew the guy in the suit was someone important.....so I went over to the guy in the suit and said 'he went in there' and I pointed at the bathroom.

They went in, and a couple minutes later, out they come, with the guy, in handcuffs, and the suit guy comes over to me, and he says, 'thank you' - and he gave me a card and told me, if I ever needed help, give a call.  And that's when I started writing the letters.  And after a few years, I got letters back, and then calls, and then.......the man in the suit came to visit me one day....in the library.....and told me about Carson.  How dangerous what he was doing was.....not just for schools, but for everyone.....so I made friends with a kid at my old school, got him to change my grades.  Then I got 'caught' but I didn't rat him out, so he was a good contact.  And I transferred here, got into the decathalon, and made friends with him.....

ISAAC -  Friends?

ARIANA -  Can I help it if smart guys like me?  Anyhow, I had to go along, to get the proof.....I'm sorry ....if...it hurt you.

(Isaac looks at a card in his hand.)

ISAAC-  Agent Harrison....

ARIANA -  Not the same guy as my suit, but they know each other.....

ISAAC -  Like one big strange family...

ARIANA -  Something like that.....  when I graduate, I get to join that family....

ISAAC -  So you're not going to Stanford....

ARIANA -  Not really.....but I never was.....

ISAAC -  Amazing!  And I did trust you...

(She looks at him, shakes her head)

ISAAC - I mean .....except for not trusting you....

ARIANA -  But I trust you....not to tell this....

ISAAC -  And if I did?  Would I disappear?

ARIANA -  Don't be silly.....you'll never tell......that's why I can tell you.....I'm a good judge of character.....something that can't be taught actually......maybe enhanced, but it's something you're born with....like math, I guess....

ISAAC -  Character.  Interesting word.  So none of what happened today is gonna be public?

ARIANA - Why would it have to be?

ISAAC -  What happens to your other boyfriend, Carson?  Does he go to jail for this?  I mean, hacking the SAT and ACT, that's pretty radical stuff.

ARIANA -  He's smart enough to get into bigger stuff than tests......so, I doubt if jail is in his future...

ISAAC -  (Horrified, stunned)  Wait a minute, so, he's gonna work for........

ARIANA -  Our side?  Us?  I hope so.  That's what this game is all about.  It's much more than winning some high school academic league decathalon!  How did you think they got Werner von Braun to make rockets for us?  By offering some fresh socks after the war?  Some ice cream?  For a smart guy.....

ISAAC -  Maybe I'm not so smart....

ARIANA -  You said it......the world is a very big place, and the future is in computers, and in people who know and understand them, what they can do, what they can't.......Carson might be just good enough to stop a war, or win one....who knows?  I'm not the judge.

ISAAC -  So, exactly...how far would you go to ....do your job?

ARIANA -  (Thinking)  I don't know.....I guess I'm gonna find out......

(She turns to leave, stops, looks back)

ARIANA -  You said none of this would be public....but there is one thing....the press will want to interview us because the fact is...... we won.

ISAAC -  And you didn't cheat.....so....how?

(He looks at the board, realizes that she is saying goodbye)

ARIANA -  One thing, Isaac, when you speak of this one day, and you will, maybe in guarded terms, but you will, please know ......I did like learning from you......and of all the things you taught me.....my favorite was.....can you guess?

(She walks over quickly and kisses him, then pulls away just as quickly)

ARIANA -  Osculation!

(She leaves as he watches her go.  Then he puts on a jacket, some glasses, he is older, and he goes to the chalkboard and starts to make some notes......)

ISAAC -  And this my dear students, is one you may be able to remember with a simple pnemonic device......

(He draws two curves as the lights start to dim)

ISAAC -  There is a term in geometry that describes the place where two curves or surfaces come into contact, or where their common tangent exists. It's almost as if the two curved lines are...... kissing. The term is.....osculation.....

(Spotlight on the curved lines, then blackout.  The end.)

(Man enters, nondescript, dressed politely, English accent)

Hello, you don't know me, but I know you.

Well, in a way you know me, you talk to me often, and I can hear, but not respond,  I'm sure you find it odd that I am here on your doorstep.

You see, I am a listener.

I listen on the phone.  It's my job.  They pay me to listen to thousands of people.  I'm supposed to screen out the ones who are about to do horrible things.  And I have done that.  Six boys ready to blow up a church in Cornwall.  Never happened.  Because of me.  Quiet me.

Have no idea how you knew about us.  I mean people suspect we are listening, but there's really no proof. So why is it you always talk about me?  How I'm listening?  And that when I get bored or tired, I do things with the phone to annoy you.  Like disconnect your call.  Well, all right, I do that, but.... how do you know that?  You can't possibly know that!  I looked you up - you never worked in our department before.  So.....how is it you know?  And, since you do know, why are you so nasty about it?  I don't like you getting all bent out of shape when I pull your plug, but after all, do you really think I like you saying 'bugger them'!

        (Listens, shrugs)

All right, it's true, I mean, we're not supposed to come out and visit folks like you.  It's frowned upon, and I might even get sacked, but.....in your case, I just had to do it!

Sometimes, I do hear a voice that is interesting, with some interesting stories.  And I have to be honest, it is one of the weaknesses I have, and I am not supposed to be here telling you any of this, but ....I just don't like what you've been saying about me!  I mean, I hear the mean things you go on about with your mates!  The other day you said I was an ass!  You said the person listening was an ass.

(Very irritated)  An ass!  You never met me, how would you know?  I mean now that you met me, you might still say it, but at least now you have a reason, right?

So, please give a thought when you say these things, I mean, after all, I am human.

(Turns to leave, stops, looks back)

And maybe, just maybe there's something I heard about you that you might wanna know......

(Starts to walk off, but a hand reaches out.  He stops, smiles.  Blackout)

(Ben Franklin enters, he is dressed for dinner, and he is happy. He carries a glass of champagne)

Welcome, friends, to a special evening where we will be celebrating the birth of our United States, now two years ago, on this very day.  We signed the Declaration, and became a nation, and tonight, here, in France, so very far from home, we lift our glasses to our second anniversary.

            (He lifts his glass)

May we have many more!

(He drinks, then lowers his cup and head)

It is now with great sadness, that I announce the death of a dear friend, Ebenezer Kinnersley.  He was a great scientist, and his work with electricity will enable the world to use this amazing scientific gift in  many wonderful ways.

Ebenezer died today - July 4th, 1778.  I will not learn of his death for several months, due to the difficulty receiving letters across an ocean where a war is being fought.

How do I know of his passing?  Through the magic of something that will allow messages to pass not just on the same day, but instantly.  It will have a strange name.....the Internet.  Personally, I would call it something more dashing, to fit with the power of the lightning rod, but as I will be long gone physically by the time the Internet is named, I will have no influence except for that involving electricity itself, which, with Ebenezer, will be one of my gifts to the world.

How can I tell you of this now?  There is a further magic- a magic of the arts.  I have seen it work in strange ways, from Mr. Shakespeare, whose tales still affect us, through an upcoming book about slavery by Harriet Beecher Stowe-  a book that will change our country, and the world, forever.
Drops of ink on a page, which helped us to start a revolution, will end slavery.  Then electricity will enable words, then images to travel across space and time, and some will work to make an evil man almost destroy our entire world.

Tiny bits of electricity, spots of ink - humans speaking on stages, on boxes!......the world will shrink, and then grow!  We will be able to see things on other planets, and throughout our universe, there will be a way to shine lights into our bodies to heal, and- after much bloodshed-  we shall all be bonded into one world that has great ability to solve the problems of all people and any one person.
This is coming.  Not tomorrow, not for a few centuries, but it is coming.

          (He lifts his glass again)

Until that time, we must succeed in our quest for freedom.

Before the future, we must solve the present.

Our French friends, who we welcome to our table, continue to enable our small band of countrymen to fight off the British.  Due to their stalwart support, we have news of great import,  Within the last two weeks, the British Navy has fired upon the French Navy, and it is with great happiness, that I announce the imminent decision of France to declare war on Great Britain.  Merci beaucoup!

         (He drinks again)

And now, for eveyone's delight, we have a special meal, and then, as General George Washington is doing for his troops on the other side of the Atlantic, a double ration of rum for all at the table!

(He drinks to empty the glass and starts to leave)

I know we approved the Declaration of Independence on the second of July, and that John Adams always felt this should be the national holiday.  I was there, and I know the real reason we celebrate on July 4.  We say it’s because we all signed on July 4th, but the truth is -  you can understand it, too, if you say it out loud - no one likes the (says it with disdain) Second of July!  (With pride)    July fourth…. go forth, our new nation,  the FOURTH OF JULY! - Now that sounds like a day for  ....fireworks!

(He exits, laughing.  If you can, fireworks can be heard)

Happy 4th to all!

        (Actor runs onstage)

Please, do not be alarmed but something strange is happening to these monologues - they are disappearing into thin air!  Why do they arrive one day, and not another?

So, this is a test of our monologue delivery system!  If this monologue does not appear in your email tomorrow, please let the writer know!

(Turns to leave, stops, looks back)

Wait a minute.....if you don't get the monologue, you won't know what to do.....I'm so confused...ok, how about this - if you get this monologue -such as it is! - please let the writer know!  Thank you!

If this had been a test......someone would have done very poorly.....wait, I thought  this was a test.

Now I'm  very confused......

(Exits to a wonderland of Internet confusion)
----------------------------------------------

Okay, I hear some of complaining that this is too short - and too strange! - to qualify for one day of monologuing.  Well, so what?  I wrote a whole play for last, that should cover it for a few days!  Seriously, many thanks for reading - and for the feedback.  And a special thank you for those of you who came to watch That24HrThing tonight - your support is very much appreciated!  (For those unable to come - last night's post  Day 1234 - You're Hired! was the play produced tonight.)
