(The older man is wearing a uniform from World War II, infantry, with a cane.  He marches onstage a little tipsy, turns, and comes to face the audience, salutes.  )

Thank you....Yes, sir, we had quite a party.  Reminds me of…..a party we had a long time ago…… most of my friends were not big drinkers, but it was the end of the war .....we were all drunk....

(Sighs)  Some of my buddies didn't make it home, so I guess.... we drank their share.

Funny, when  reporters ask about D-Day, they always want to hear how it felt to hit the beach.  But what I remember.....on that transport the night before, was waiting, and throwing up!

Maybe the bad weather made dying on shore look like a better idea........and we did, we died.  We sank, we got hit, we got blown up....thousands of us that one day.

But the night before, we were alive....and miserable.

Every night of my life since that night, .I've wondered.... what it would have been like......... had I died the next morning.  Like some of my friends….

I would never have gotten married, had kids.... grandchildren.......that night was over 70 years ago, and I still can remember my head in the toilet......

Funny what you think about.......when you  have a few too many. ....

(He takes a wallet from his pocket, removes a photo)

This is a picture I have of our gang..... the week after Pearl Harbor..

And now you can take the picture …..of who's left.  Me.....

(He stands up very straight, adjusts his cap, and holds the photo in front of his chest.  There is a flash, he salutes and exits.  Almost the end of an era we must never forget.)

And for all those who were on those boats the night before - and who fought the next day, and all the days after- we thank you.

(The older man is wearing a uniform from World War II, infantry, with a cane.  He marches onstage a little tipsy, turns, and comes to face the audience, salutes.  )

I'm sorry I'm late.....and I wanna thank you again for doing this.  I know everything is digital and computer these days, so I appreciate….a touch of the past....

         (Listens)

Yes, sir, we had quite a party.  Tonight’s festivities reminded me of…..a party we had a long time ago……

I knew it was a good party because everyone was drunk.  And most of my friends were not big drinkers, but it was the end of the war.

(Sighs)  Some of my buddies didn't make it home, so I guess we drank their share.

Why am I talking about this tonight?  Because tonight is June 5th, and at midnight, it becomes the anniversary of D-Day.

I was on a transport on June 5th, waiting to hear if the landing was actually going to happen.  Funny, when the reporters ask about D-Day, they always want to hear how it felt to hit the beach.  But what I remember.....was the night before, because it was waiting, and throwing up, and waiting some more.  We'd been floating for what seemed like years.  Everyone wanted to get off those boats.  Maybe the bad weather was good, it made dying on shore look like a better idea........and we did, we died.  We sank, we got hit, we got blown up....thousands of us that one day.

But the night before, we were alive....and miserable.

Every night of my life since that night, I have thought, just before I drift off to sleep......I have wondered what it would have been like, had I died the next morning.  Like some of my friends….

I would never have gotten married, had kids, had grandchildren.......that night was over 70 years ago, and I still can remember my head in the toilet......

Funny what you think about.......when you  have a few too many.

(He takes a wallet from his pocket, removes a photo)

This is a picture I have of our gang, back then, when we signed up, the week after Pearl Harbor..

And now you can take the picture …..of who's left.

(He stands up very straight, adjusts his cap, and holds the photo in front of his chest.  There is a flash, he salutes and exits.  Almost the end of an era we must never forget.)

And for all those who were on those boats the night before - and who fought the next day, and all the days after- we thank you.

(Woman enters, can be any age)

The medication does help, doctor.  I can feel it....see it in other's faces.  They look at me and I don't see fear in their eyes anymore.  That should be a good sensation, I know.

It would make me happy....if I were normal.

But I'm not.

That I know, too.

You see, the sad voices, they're not shouting any more...not screaming, not reminding me of all I have to be sad about.......

Now....the sad is just ……whispering.

Faintly, like a breeze in the leaves of a tree nearby, but not too close ......

And you say you want me to take more of this medicine......that if I'm better with a little, then more.....more will make me even more better......

I don't know.....I'll have to think about it......a little more…

You'll have to ....give me some more time.

(Turns to leave, stops, looks back)

The problem is......I like the whispering sad.......

         (Exits into the sad)

(The announcer comes onstage, waving at the audience.)

Wasn't that a fantastic act?  Please, another well-deserved round of applause for Mildred and her dancing monkey!

(The announcer claps and encourages the audience to do the same.)

And now, for something completely different......and not Monty Python different, just plain old.....(searches for a word).......different......We proudly present......Danny Taylor performing his world famous........can we get a drum roll please?.......Danny Taylor and his..........(Loud ) .....Invisible monologue!

(The announcer stands aside and 'watches' the monologue, starting to laugh immediately, then getting slowly more hysterical until the announcer is on the floor twirling in a circle while laughing.  Finally, the announcer gets up and indicates the 'performer')

Let's here it for the magnificent Danny!

(The announcer wipes eyes and waves as the 'performer' leaves. )

You see why we saved the best for last!  That just gets better every time I see it!  And thank you - you've been a wonderful audience......

             (Exits, but looks back)

And you should have seen the rehearsals....they were amazing, too!  You can catch the bloopers on youtube....!

For those carefully reading, you may see few changes - you're right!  Only four words were removed from the original post (the last four to be specific)  - because the real way you make this piece shorter is simply.....have a shorter 'invisible' monologue!  that's right.....depending on the actor, and the time, you can adjust the length of 'Danny Taylor's' monologue to fit any situation.

(A person comes onstage one phone in each hand.  The person is  smiling like a machine.)

(Very fast)  Hello, your call is important to us, with whom am I having the pleasure of speaking.   Hello, my name is .(garbled name)....., and I will be happy to help you today.....

(The person pushes a button and laughs)

But you will have to call back because we were just disconnected!  I'm so sorry, that often happens now with all these cell phones....

(Phones start buzzing, actor pulls some from pockets)

Your call is important to us....

Your call is important to us....

Your call is so important, that we do not hire enough human beings to speak with you immediately!
Your call is so important that it is almost impossible to have one call solve the problem, because we love to hear back from you!   Our motto is- please don't go away mad, just go away!

Our logic is based on the studies that show even if a customer is very annoyed, if a special bargain is offered, the customer will forget all previous anger.

And now, for the most important part of the call......please hold while we connect you with our service representative........

(Person hangs up all the lines and turns to leave, looks back)

Thank you for calling!  If we get disconnected, please call back because......(whispers)...your call is very important to us!

Hello, your call is important to us....

Hello, your call is important to us....

Hello, your call is important to us.....

So important we spend money on specialists that design these lovely questions for you to answer!  We are so interested in your responses, that we record them!  Notice we never promise to listen, just to record so that you can help in our training process.  So not only are you important because you buy things, you are important because you help train our employees!

Your value is endless!  And valued!

And please recall that your call is so important, that we do not hire enough human beings to speak with you immediately so that you can listen to music that is chosen for its ability to both soothe and annoy almost anyone at any one moment!

So please understand how important all this is to our bottom line - and if you have any question who is at the bottom of the line, the answer should obvious.....it's you!

Please note -Shortened for my upcoming book - 30 Monologues Under 30 Seconds
This is the revised version under 30 seconds -original is below- first posted Feb. 17, 2014

All the monologues for this book have been timed - but your performance will determine the length.  Usually between 30 seconds and one minute is acceptable for auditions preferring short monologues.  Use a stopwatch for best results - video for even better.  Good luck!

(A man is thrown onto the stage - literally falling from the side and taking a moment to get up.  He is disheveled, obviously stoned - not for the first or even 101st time - hair long and stringy - and dirty.  His clothes are dirty - we can almost smell them.  He is not in great shape, maybe even a little bloody from this fight.  He stands with difficulty, shaking a fist at the person who did this.)

I don't think that was very nice, Mom......

(He wipes his nose on his sleeve, stumbles)

All of this was your fault -

(He holds his head as if there is some terrible noise within)

You loved Jimmy more!  You know you did!  I.....

(He now has trouble following the thought, sits on the ground.)

I need something to drink....

(Shouting)  I need you to let me back in so I can get my stuff!

(He turns - he has heard something.  He ducks to avoid something thrown at                      him. He hears another noise, ducks again.   Listens to someone calling, his mouth                drops open.  He's really mad now)

(Shouting)  I'm not gonna thank you for throwing my own shoes at me!

          (Listens)

Call the cops!  What do I care?

(He turns and his shoulders heave)

It wasn't my fault!  Jimmy was a better rider - he was older... I was following him!

(This is hard for him to talk about, but he is trying.)

(Quieter)  The ground was so slippery..........we shoulda had helmets, but no one had helmets then!  That's why I don't ride anymore, Mom! ......  If I could do anything to get him back, I would!

          (He is almost crying)

But it wasn't my fault!

(He shakes his head, something coming through the fog.)

Maybe....maybe I shoulda gone first that day,..maybe I wouldn't have died - or if I did, maybe I'd be better off........maybe you're right mom, maybe it is my fault......

(He stands there, stunned by this revelation.  Then he hears something.)

So you did call the cops...thanks Mom.......

(He walks off, staggering a little.)

Thanks a lot.......

       (The end)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Original -  about 1 minute

(A man is thrown onto the stage - literally falling from the side and taking a moment to get up.  He is disheveled, obviously stoned - not for the first or even 101st time - hair long and stringy - and dirty.  His clothes are dirty - we can almost smelly them.  Torn, not too new, he is not in great shape, maybe even a little bloody from this fight. He stands with difficulty, shaking a fist at the person who did this.)

I don't think that was very nice, Mom......

(He wipes his nose on his sleeve, stumbles)

It was your fault - all of this was your fault!

And you know it!

(He holds his head as if there is some terrible noise within)

You loved Jimmy more!  You know you did!  You made me into what I am, and I just...I just....

(He now has trouble following the thought, sits on the ground.)

What was I saying?

I need something to drink....

(Shouting)  I need you to let me back in so I can get my stuff!

(He turns - he has heard something.  He ducks to avoid something thrown at him.)

Thanks a lot!

Whadda my gonna do with one shoe?

(He hears another noise, ducks again.   Listens to someone calling, his mouth drops open.  He's really mad now)

(Shouting)  I'm not gonna thank you for throwing my own shoes at me!

If you just took care of me the way you took care of Jimmy - or the damn house, I wouldn't be like this!

Call the cops!  What do I care?

(He turns and his shoulders heave)

It wasn't my fault!  Jimmy was a better rider - he had a newer bike!  I was following him!

(This is hard for him to talk about, but he is trying.)

(Quieter)  I didn't know the rain would make the ground so slippery.....I didn't know that when he fell and hit his head on those rocks...he would die.  He was older...he shoulda known better........we shoulda had helmets, but no one had helmets then!  That's why I don't ride anymore, Mom!  Why I only walk or take the bus!  If I could do anything to get him back, I would!

(He is almost crying)

I know it destroyed you, Mom, and Dad, and....maybe our whole family, but it wasn't my fault!

(He shakes his head, something coming through the fog.)

Maybe....maybe I shoulda gone first that day, maybe my bike was smaller, maybe it wouldn't have skidded.....maybe I wouldn't have died - or if I did, maybe I'd be better off........maybe you're right mom, maybe it is my fault......

(He stands there, stunned by this revelation.  Then he hears something.)

So you did call the cops...thanks Mom.......

(He walks off, staggering a little.)

Thanks a lot.......
