(An older black woman enters walking with a cane or walker, she has a slight Southern accent)

On this day......

Did alla you know, that today April 14th ......this is a very special day?  Not just the day everybody goes crazy because taxes are due tomorrow!

On April 14th in 1775, the very first American Society for the Abolition of Slavery was started in the great city of Philadelphia.  Someone you mighta heard of.....Benjamin Franklin was his name.....he was elected President of this group a few years later.... .......

And ninety years later, on April 14th, the man who freed the slaves.......you mighta hearda him, too...Abe Lincoln....he was shot.....in the theater......

           (She looks around)

So keep your eyes open in a theater, ya hear?

And last year, one year ago today, my grandson called to invite me to his graduation from Berkeley.....law school......and I went, and it was wonderful.  A day I never thought I'd see.....

And today is a special day, too, because today......is the day I died.......(laughs) if I'd a known it was this easy, I wouldn't a been so worried!

          (She indicates a side room)

They're all in there cryin'.......but me, I'm doin' fine!  I don't even think I need this damn thing anymore...

(She takes the cane and throws it to the side)

My mama used to say.....on any day......if you can learn somethin', if you can help someone.....if you can thank someone......it's a good day.

Well, today..... I learned how to die.....and right now, I am teaching my family about dyin'......and I can thank God for a good life......on this day......

(She turns to leave, stops, looks back)

How was YOUR day?

(She exits, to a place with pearly gates.)
